New Chair appointed to Barrett’s Oesophagus Campaign 19.01.10

Mimi McCord has been appointed the new Chair of Barrett’s Oesophagus Campaign.

She succeeds Dr Paul Salmon who held the position for the past three years. Under his enthusiastic and untiring chairmanship the charity made significant progress on a number of fronts, not least through the maintenance and expansion of the UK Barrett’s Oesophagus Registry (UKBOR), the largest database of cases of Barrett’s Oesophagus in the world, and its work recognised by the international medical community.

Mimi McCord was already a Trustee and was spearheading the Barrett’s Support Network on behalf of the charity, reaching out to Barrett’s sufferers, their family and friends with information and advice.

No stranger to the condition, Mimi founded the McCord Oesophageal Cancer Fund in 2003 in memory of her husband, Michael, who died from Barrett’s Adenocarcinoma without having the benefit of a previous diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus.

In 2008, she merged her Fund with the Barrett’s Oesophagus Foundation (BOF) – the original name of the charity prior to its enlargement and change of name to the Barrett’s Oesophagus Campaign (BOC) in 2009.

Dr Peter Reed, Co-Founder of BOF, Trustee of BOC and retired consultant gastroenterologist, says: “Naturally we are very sorry to see Paul Salmon go. He gave a great deal of his time and effort unstintingly on behalf of the charity which has benefited greatly as a result. We wish to thank him for all that he accomplished during his chairmanship."

“We welcome Mimi McCord, who has a deep understanding of the subject through personal experience. The charity intends to develop and expand its activities related to this condition and increase its efforts to make the general public more aware of the need for early diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus and its complications.”
