Hi there,

I'm so nervous to go to my doctor tomorrow to get the result of my biopsy tests. My doctor suspects Barrett's and a hiatal hernia. It's been three long weeks of waiting and I'm trying not to be scared. Any suggestions or ways to calm down? Any vital questions I should ask?

Thanks for listening.

Hi Sue,

Good news is, if there had been anything awful, you would probably have been called sooner.
Hiatus hernia is nothing to worry about as it's so common and, apart from weakening the lower oesophageal sphincter, permitting reflux, shouldn't cause problems.

The biopsies may or may not confirm Barrett's.
What you want to know is whether there any signs of dysplasia and if so whether low grade or high grade. But there is a 95% chance that there will be no dysplasia.

If you have Barrett's your specialist will discuss medication and lifestyle changes and you will be screened every two or three years. If there is low grade dysplasia, you'll be screened more frequently. If there's high grade dysplasia, he'll discuss what they'll do to remove or ablate it.

All the best for tomorrow. I guess the not knowing is far worse than the knowing - whatever the results show.

Thanks Chris,
Your kind words help me put things in perspective. I think part of the reason I'm unsettled is the fact I'm also retiring at the end of October, so I have so much on the go at the moment. I also write books as my hobby and am in the midst of edits with deadlines. My endoscopy was booked for Feb. 2011 but I had asked to be on the cancellation list and wouldn't you know it, the next day, they had a cancellation. :) So everything seemed to move fast and I was shocked about Barrett's as I had never heard of it before. The past 6 years have been all about my husband's illnesses, so it's been hard to focus on my own problems. Everything just seems to be colliding so it'll be good to go tomorrow, even though I'm scared, to find out what's going on.

I actually feel good. I've now lost 12 pounds and I'm determined to lose more. I eat smaller meals and stay away from all the acid stuff. I walk 40 minutes every day and also take an exercise class twice a week. I'm also training my dog in agility, hoping to compete one day.

So thanks for your kind words. I'll get through this. THANK YOU.
Sue
